Are you a regular cook, home chef, own a home-based F&B business, or simply cook a lot for your kids at home, and wondering how to conduct proper stove top cleaning?

Jealous of our “before” and “after” results of stove top cleaning?

Well, anybody who cooks a lot will definitely notice grime, stains, and blots on their stove countertop. Want to get rid of them permanently? Alright then let’s start learning how to do proper cleaning of the stove top:

Before you start any stove top cleaning:

Before you clean, make sure all electrical or gas components are turned off to prevent fires.

Next, refer to the stove’s instruction manual or owner’s manual. Most are available online with the brand and model. Why? This is because different stove tops have different components. Some can be removed for cleaning easily, some not so easily, and some are irremovable. Components include, but are not limited to, knobs, heating elements, cooktops, and so on. Also, understanding the manual will prevent accidental damage of your stove during cleaning.

Now, we will go into further details: the equipment needed for cleaning as well as the differences in handling 3 different types of cleaning of the stove tops: gas stove, electric stove, and induction stove. To understand more about different types of stoves check out this article.

Gas Stove Top Cleaning

  1. Before you start to clean, make sure the gas supply is turned off and the stove is not hot.
  2. Don your gloves and remove the burner caps, grates, and other parts. Place them in a pail with dishwashing liquid. Soak them in hot soapy water and then scrub with a soft sponge. Do not exert too much force to prevent scratches. However, if stains cannot come off and you are not worried about scratches, feel free to use the steel sponge as certain grates can be made of tough cast iron.
  3. Leave the stove top components soaking whilst you move on to cleaning the stove top itself.
  4. When cleaning the stove, you can choose to use either all-purpose cleaner or baking soda. Mix baking soda with water, making a paste. Smear the paste onto stains and blotches that are hard to remove.Let the paste sit for a few minutes. You can also use the baking soda paste to clean your gas stove parts.
  5. A ceramic or plastic knife is sharp enough to remove any hard coatings of food on the gas stovetop. Don’t use any sharp objects made of metal, as they might leave scratches. For extra-tough coatings, you may use your all-purpose cleaner or baking soda paste and steel sponge to wipe off debris.
  6. Finally, if your stovetop can be lifted up, clean any stains underneath.
  7. To end the cleaning, use a damp cloth with plain water, to wipe down the whole gas stovetop and components. Then, use a dry cloth to wipe off any moisture. Your cleaning is now complete!

  1. To start electric stove top cleaning, turn on the stove to high heat. Let the heat burn off any leftover food or debris. If it starts to smoke, open the windows. When the smoking stops, turn off the stove. Wipe off any debris with a damp cloth.
  2. Wait for 20 minutes for the stove to cool down, to avoid scalding yourself.
  3. Now, don your gloves to start proper wet cleaning. First, remove the electric heating coils. If there are drip pans, remove them as well. Place them all in a bucket, pail or your kitchen sink for scrubbing.
  4. Secondly, add hot water and dishwashing liquid or degreaser to the components. Soak the coils, drip pans, and other components (if you have) and scrub them. If they need extra strength to remove grime, add a little ammonia and immerse them for longer. You can even soak them for a few hours. Once done, remove and rinse with clean water and dry them.
  5. Thirdly, let us start cleaning the stove top itself: you can choose to use either all-purpose cleaner or baking soda. Mix baking soda with water, making a paste. Smear the paste onto stains and blotches that are hard to remove. Let the paste sit for a few minutes.
  6. Then, scrub the stovetop with a damp sponge to erase stains and grime.
  7. Fourthly, if your stovetop can be lifted up, clean any stains underneath. You can use a sharp object, like a knife or screwdriver, to remove any hard coatings of food. For extra-tough coatings, use your all-purpose cleaner or baking soda paste again.
  8. Fifthly, wipe down the surface of the stovetop with soap and water again to remove the cleaning residues. Repeat with plain water and then wipe dry.
  9. Lastly, reassemble everything only after they are completely dry. Now, you are ready to use your stove top again!

Induction stove tops are easier to clean. They usually only have a flat and smooth black glass surface, and do not have too many components that the gas and electric stovetops have.

  1. To clean the induction stove, first, make sure the stovetop is cool before you start to clean.
  2. Mix a little dishwashing liquid with warm water. Soak a cloth in the mixture and wipe the black glass surfaces.
  3. Alternatively, you can use a specialized stove cleaning spray or glass cleaning spray too. We recommend microfibre cloth to avoid scratches to the surface.
  4. Next, rinse off with plain water and soft sponge. Then, use a dry cloth to dry the surfaces.
  5. For a more intense cleaning, coat dirty parts of the black glass with baking soda paste or pure distilled vinegar. Then moisten a towel with hot water and cover the areas coated with baking soda paste or distilled vinegar.
  6. After 10 minutes, use the towel to scrub the black glass. Rinse the towel if necessary. To end off, dry the surfaces with a dry cloth again.
  7. Your induction stove will now be shiny and clean!
